It is a strange time of year, this space between Christmas and New Year. The final week of 2016 and we are in limbo.
Time with our families is coming to an end and the long days are merging into one. We are torn between wanting to stay in our PJ’s all day watching Netflix, and wanting everyone back at school and work so we can start making those plans for the next twelve months.
The chaos of the last month is over and now we are tired and reflective – positive and negative all rolled into one. Mixed emotions as to how well we did, or didn’t do. Questioning product ranges that didn’t sell as well as we thought. Surprised at the number of new customers that we acquired. Stuck as to whether we start our 2017 planning now or wait until the New Year when psychologically it really is a fresh start.
We may be itching to get going, we may be aching to stay still and quiet for a while longer.
It’s easier for those in a more traditional job, or for our children at school – they have no choice but to get up and turn up, but for us self employed artists and makers it is tougher. We are in charge of our own schedule and our own motivation. Some of us find it easier than others – but for most, January is a really difficult month.
However we are feeling, sooner or later the inevitable hits us and we have to get back to normal. But you don’t have to do it alone. Google & Pinterest are full of blogs and vlogs telling you how to get ahead in 2017 and how to make this your best year yet for your business. There are planners and targets and goals and strategies that we can all tap into to support us. It’s just about finding which one is right for you, and the way that you work.
The Design Trust has a brilliant exercise to help you reflect on 2016 to help you focus where you did well and what you enjoyed most and what was successful for you. Mine is printed off waiting to be completed and I am rather looking forward to the process. It is a completely free download, which will help you focus your attentions for next year. If you want to take it that bit further, they also have a monthly planner which you can purchase here.
Other examples of workbooks that have appeared in my newsfeed are from Jenny Hyde and The Makers Business Toolkit – both are available to purchase on their websites and will also help you work through your past year of trading and work out how you can move forward successfully.
As well as letting you know what else is available, we must offer our own services also! At the Creative Business Network we have lots of things planned for 2017 and want to be able to help and support you with your planning as much as we can. We have sent out hundreds of our own free calendars and planners over the last few weeks and hope that you will be putting them in action over the coming months. We are also offering our own support package alongside the planner, which will work as a monthly membership offering a huge amount of guidance and advice. If you would like to find out more please visit our membership page on our website here. Not only will you be able to attend our creative women meetings for free, we will focus on monthly targets as highlighted in our planner, offer you regular top tips, how to’s, vlogs and blogs and a private Facebook support group. We are passionate about providing you with a supportive business network full of like minded creatives so please do join us. As always, we have lots of events planned over the next year as well as an exciting collaboration that we can't wait to share with you.
However you decide to approach the end and the beginning of another year, planning is essential. Regardless of whether you are keen to get going right now, or still so very tired after the Christmas rush, let us help you.
Together, we will help you find the best way to build and grow yourself and your business.
May we take this opportunity to wish you a very happy and healthy New Year.
See you in 2017!
