This weekend I was fortunate enough to attend an embroidery retreat, held by the wonderful Marna Lunt. The weekend was a beautiful bubble of stitch, therapy, laughter, tears and plenty of delicious food and drink. It felt completely indulgent, and a million miles away from the real life responsibilities that we all have.
I was expecting sewing, I was expecting to meet new people and I was expecting (or at least hoping for) a bit of me time! But what I wasn’t expecting was how hugely therapeutic the whole weekend was. It was emotional. It was educational (but not only in a ‘learn these stitches’ kind of way.) It was fulfilling, and it was a start to discovering more about myself and where I am right now. Which I really didn’t expect. Marna is so right calling the retreat ‘Thread Therapy’ because that is truly what it was.
What I discovered was that the retreat attracted real like-minded souls, those of us who may have struggled with loss, depression or disability. It attracted those who enjoy immersing themselves in their creativity. It attracted those who could express their thoughts easily (to complete strangers!) It attracted really fascinating characters. It was a hugely bonding experience between those of us who attended.
It is a unique feeling to be so totally absorbed in what you are doing that you are more open to everything around you.
There are many, many retreats that are available – one can choose from craft, spirituality or self improvement, yoga, fasting, meditation, or a whole host of other things. You can go to the other side of the world or your next town. You can do it with lots of people or just a few. Stay for a weekend or a whole week. What you choose to do is pretty limitless, but there are a few things that each and every one has in common.
We love this blog which lists 10 reasons why retreats are so important. "You gather your forces to focus them on something you love. From this place, you get a new perspective, you regroup and re-energize. You find inspiration."
Not only do these retreats help us develop personally, but also professionally.
This is also a great article which lists more benefits of taking a retreat for your business development and enforces why taking the time out for yourself is so important. It says; “You don't know what you don't know - and sometimes you need other people to help you see things differently.”
Jenny Hyde has run life changing retreats for the last few years, to help you and your business grow. She expresses that during the weekend with her, “You’ll have chance to reflect on your business as it is now, the things that have gone well, and the dreams you have for the future.”
Because that’s what it is about isn’t it - making your dreams a reality? How can you do that if you don’t take some time out for self discovery every now and again?
But do make sure you find the right one for you so think about what do you need, and what the retreat will give you. You may be concerned about the financial side - the costs tend to be higher than you may initially want to spend, but I believe it is a cost worth investing in. Look at it as an investment in your business, by taking the time to focus on you. If you look after yourself, you have so much more energy to put into your business. You can develop your purpose, and the reason that drives the passion for your business. Which then in turn helps your business grow.
Any like me, you may find a few kindred spirits along the way.
