Do you feel a sense of anticipation at this time of year? For many of us, we relish the prospect of order being restored after a summer of chaos. If you are a parent, having children off school for 6 weeks can give you a sense of freedom or frustration, but either way – normal behavior has to resume sooner or later. However way you spend it, summer overall always seems to be a time of relaxation, sunshine, family & friends and this must end at some point.
For us, the start of term couldn’t come soon enough! We say this, not because it has been particularly difficult but because we see September as a time of new beginnings. And exciting beginnings at that.
Thinking back to our childhoods, new term always brought with it blank sketch books, empty lines in the school books and so many prospects ahead. We relished those empty books, and the power we could have within them. We still feel like that now. Even more so than 1st January, the 1st September is the perfect time to make some new resolutions. We know that plans aplenty need to be made, and daily lists need to be started.
What do the next three months have in store for you?
Why not take this new term as an opportunity to really carve out your plans for your business? Think about what you need to achieve between now and Christmas and focus on making those aims a reality. Even buying yourself a new notebook, diary or sketchbook would be a good place to start with your planning. Looking at ways to bullet journal is a great option – this is a particularly effective way of making lists that work. You can see a lot of articles that we have pinned on our bullet journal Pinterest board here.
Try to be realistic about what you want to achieve, which will make it easier to stick to, and you won’t feel so overwhelmed with the huge tasks ahead.
It may be that you want to get your social media channels sorted in time to make the most of the Christmas period. Have you let Twitter slip? How can you get back on it and encourage more followers?
Do you have a dwindling mailing list that needs refreshing? Or are you overdue in sending out a newsletter? Now is the perfect time to compose some to send out over the next few months to let your customers know of special offers you will be having for Christmas or new products you have designed.
You may decide that blogging is the way you are really going to make a difference to your online presence. Plan out weekly blogs that you are going to write about, and then stick to it. This is on our list, and we are putting aside a Tuesday to write the blog to publish on a Wednesday. By putting that day in your weekly diary means you have to stick to it. Make it part of your routine.
It may be that your online presence is perfectly sorted and you have it ticking along nicely. Therefore, now is the time to plan for new designs, or getting together new stock. Do you have a certain amount of products that you have to sell over the next couple of months? How are you going to make that happen?
What shows do you have coming up? Are you prepared for them? Make a list of everything that you need to do for each show – and remember to be realistic! It may be that the prospect of getting ready for the show is a lot less scary than the reality.
Sometimes, the unattainable lists that we make in our head panic us because that’s exactly what they are – unattainable! We worry about the amount of ‘stuff’ we have to do, but by starting afresh – new term, new book, new lists – we can be realistic about our ambitions and make them less scary and more exciting – and fun!
Ultimately, by making a fresh start at the beginning of September – ready for this new Autumn term, means you will be armed and ready with whatever comes your way over the next few months. This is an exciting time ahead of us. We love the change of the season, change in colours and changes in the smell of the air. Halloween and Bonfire Night. Open fires and cosy evenings. We may be saying goodbye to the summer, but there is plenty of excitement and potential ahead.

We look forward to hearing from you!
